London 2012 – Capturing the mood of the Olympics

This summer, the largest sporting event in the world will be upon us. With Olympic fever set to grip the nation, it’s worth thinking about the photos you can take in this defining moment of our sporting history.

Although you’d need official accreditation to sell photos taken inside the sporting venues, there’s every reason to take your camera elsewhere, even if you don’t have a press pass.

Sport and a sense of national pride will be major themes throughout the summer, as we celebrate our successes, join together as a country and soak up the atmosphere. Your photos can capture this unique mood, whether it’s children playing football in their local park, people dusting off their unused rackets for a spot of tennis or communities gathering for a street party.

London and other venues will be flooded with a cosmopolitan mix of sports fans and competitors from around the world and the eclectic combination of culture and competition will make a fascinating backdrop for your photos. Our buildings and landscape have changed too, and there’s nothing to stop you photographing the stadia from outside and documenting the regeneration that’s taken place.

Think about how your photos will convey the colours, look, feel and pride of the United Kingdom, and upload them to Alamy – like the Olympics, they could have a lasting legacy and make you some money too.

We’ll definitely see a significant increase in demand for sports related imagery on Alamy, approaching and during the Games, so here are some suggestions on the types of photos you could take to capture the mood and contribute the perfect Olympic-themed shot…
  • The cultural impact of the Olympics, events surrounding the Games themselves
  • The increase in national iconography, patriotic images and images of national flags and emblems
  • The infrastructure surrounding the games including stadia, media coverage, transport links etc
  • Sports photos relating to each sport – this might be old favourites like athletics, football, tennis, horse riding and sailing, or the more unusual events such as water polo or Greco-Roman wrestling
  • Other major sporting events in the run up to the Olympics
  • Photographs of people involved in local events, whether community, competitive or fun based (fun runs, tug of war, sports days, street parties)
There will also be demand for more general and conceptual sports-related photos, this might be:
  • Images of victory, winning, glory and competition
  • Close ups of equipment, stadia, running tracks, seating and more
  • Exercising and competing, body parts, tensed muscles and grimacing faces
  • Emotions from sport like euphoria, focus, disappointment and exhaustion
Whatever you’re looking forward to at the Olympics, take your camera, capture some unique imagery and let us help you share it with the world.

Asian stock photo company, Photokore, launches Russian image search

Stock photography company Photokore adds Russian to its list of supported search languages, which already include English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, Hindi, Indonesian, Thai, Filipino, Spanish, French and German. Photokore is the first Asian stock photography site to offer search in this many languages.

Penetrating the growing Asian image market is the goal for many photographers. However, it has been difficult to reach the Asian image market due to an absence of a site where customers can search for stock images in their native tongue.

Photokore eliminates this hurdle with their growing list of Asian search languages, and also facilitates image search by non-Asian customers by providing English, Spanish, French, German, and now Russian search functionality.

According to Photokore’s CEO, Sean Mooney, “Gaining global exposure for their creative work is one of the reasons so many Asian Artists have joined Photokore. With the addition of Russian, we’re allowing our artists’ images to be searched by even more of the global image-purchasing market – in their native tongue”.

Photokore is a royalty-free stock photography site dedicated to offering high quality global images to the Asian market, and unique Asian images to the world. Photokore’s website supports image uploads and purchases in English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Visitors to www.photokore.com can search for images in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Indonesian, Thai, Filipino, English, Spanish, French, German and Russian. Landing pages are also available in Arabic, Malaysian and Vietnamese.

All photos and illustrations on photokore.com can be licensed for creative use – whether on a personal website, or in a global marketing campaign – at prices ranging from US$1 – US$40.

Fotolia Expands To New Worldwide Markets and Now Covers 20 Countries

NEW YORK, July 17, 2012 – Fotolia continues to span the globe by expanding its services to Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Australia. With this recent expansion, Fotolia now provides services to 20 countries in 12 official languages. The launch of localized services in Latin America and Australia is a strategic move to acquire more content from local contributing artists, and to build long-lasting relationships with customers in these countries.

With high Internet penetration rates, Fotolia’s unique, Internet-based stock photography business has flourished in North America and Europe. Though South American rates grew over 10x over the last 10 years, they still only have 55% of the Internet penetration rate that North America has. This increase in Internet access feeds directly into Fotolia’s crowdsourcing model.

Since Fotolia’s expansion into Brazil in 2010, the company has experienced a positive influx in Latin American interest. With several of their best-selling artists from Argentina, Fotolia is looking forward to discovering and recruiting top talent in Latin America. Alejandro Ventura, professional photographer and Regional Director of Fotolia South America, confirms this trend. “Latin countries are full of talented photographers waiting to be discovered. Fotolia is going to help reach a worldwide audience by introducing microstock and licensing concepts to these new untapped markets.”

“We’ve seen incredible growth in Latin America and Australia, and they’re quickly becoming as big as some of our European markets. Localizing our services was essential to providing the best care to our growing customer base”, says Oleg Tscheltzoff, CEO and co-founder of Fotolia. “We continue to be the stock photography agency with the best international coverage, and our recent endorsement by KKR means that we can consider exciting opportunities and expand our reach to more countries.”

About Fotolia
Over 3.5 million people prefer Fotolia for affordable, royalty-free images, graphics and HD videos. T3Media Launches Paya.com, a Next Generation Digital Content Commerce Service

New Platform Unlocks Commerce for Billions of Assets by Enabling Distribution across the Web and Putting Creators in Control

DENVER, June 27, 2012—T3Media, Inc. (formerly Thought Equity Motion), a leading provider of cloud-based video management and licensing services, today announced the launch of a new licensing offering—Paya ™ (Pay-ya), the world’s index of licensable content™. To watch a short video that explains how Paya works, click here.

Paya taps into the explosion of content creation by putting creators in control. Producers of all sizes can sell photos and videos by turning their personal websites and social networks into a virtual storefront, as Paya enables users to tag existing content, from sites such as YouTube, Flickr and Facebook—with “buy” links. Sellers can quickly make their content sellable with a Craigslist-style listing tool, choose their own terms and pricing, and keep an 80% share from every sale.

“Content creation has radically outpaced distribution and Paya offers powerful tools to unlock content’s value,” said Kevin Schaff, CEO and Founder of T3Media. “Traditional, centralized licensing channels only serve a tiny fraction of the billions of photos and videos being created. Our company has nearly a decade of experience with content access and licensing and we believe that Paya is a game changer in opening up a more than $15 billion market for content in a wide range of existing and new uses.”

Paya allows everyone, from professional photographers and videographers to average consumers with iPhones or DSLR digital cameras, to sell their work using social community reach and the speed of the Web. Paya creates a new direct channel between buyer and seller. The site also streamlines the licensing process—providing guidelines and flexible profiles for rights and pricing—and enables file delivery after transactions are complete. Sellers are in full control of pricing and terms, while Paya’s promotion and selling tools help drive buyer discovery across the Web. Paya’s Selling Toolkit provides logos and links, as well as a powerful “auto-tagging” feature that can automatically create links on a creator’s content on sites (e.g., YouTube or Flickr) to purchase listings on Paya.

“Professional and amateur photographers and videographers are uploading and posting online billions of pieces of their creative work every month – YouTube’s monthly video upload totals exceed decades of production from the major networks,” said Michael McGuire, Research VP, Media at Gartner. “But for many of those creators, the ability to monetize those creations is either elusive or requires giving up a significant amount of control.”

Paya’s model opens up a range of untapped content markets for buyers and sellers. This includes everything from professionally shot stock photography or video and citizen journalism to sports licensing and photo services around areas such as travel, weddings, and school events. Paya can also serve as a licensing engine for films, documentaries, shorts and other content. A new platform for buyers to discover and request content is also presented with Paya. With the “I Wanna Paya” tool, a buyer can find content anywhere on the Web and create an open Paya listing to send to the owner requesting to buy it. The seller can then review and agree to terms and manage the transaction through Paya.

“Since 1992, we’ve been making award-winning films and have brought them to theaters, broadcast television, the Internet and other new media platforms. We are now making footage from those stories available on Paya,” said Paya beta user Michael Brown, Founder and President of Serac Adventure Films, who has auto-tagged Seracfilms.com and the company’s Vimeo page with Paya links to open up content to a global community. “We’re excited about selling content through Paya because it’s the first licensing site that lets the creator control the terms and price for the content and we receive the lion’s share of the profits. We provide exclusive content from destinations like Mount Everest that allows others to use footage they couldn’t possibly shoot themselves.”

To learn more about Paya, visit www.paya.com. For press inquiries, contact alurie@t3media.com.

iStockphoto to Launch the Collective Comic Project at the WIRED Café at Comic-Con 2012

Community Created Comic Celebrates More Than a Decade of Stock Illustration Sales and a Revamp of Feast, iStock’s Online Gathering Place for Creatives

San Diego, Calif.: July 12, 2012 — Today at the WIRED Café at Comic-Con, iStockphoto announced the beginning of its Collective Comic Project, a community-driven digital comic progressively illustrated by ten leading iStock artists. The comic’s storyline will be developed with input from event attendees and members of Feast, iStock’s online gathering place for creative people of all types.

Starting today, Comic-Con participants, iStockers and comic fans the world over will have the opportunity to choose the story’s hero, villain, location, genre, love interest and problem by visiting feast.istockphoto.com. There they will be presented with a series of options for the various components of the story and will be able to vote for their favorites.

Deviants, misfits and non-conformists will have the chance to submit their own original ideas as well. The final concept for the comic will be driven by the most popular selections as well as any other suggestions that are simply too awesome or crazy to pass up. At that point, the first illustrator will have seven days to create a set of panels and advance the story before the next artist takes over the following week. Ten artists. Ten weeks. One amazing comic.

“iStockphoto is home to some of the most incredible stock illustrators and illustrations from around the globe and we were looking for a unique way to celebrate both,” said Rebecca Rockafellar, senior vice president of E-Commerce at Getty Images and general manager of iStockphoto. “Throughout history, illustrations have been one of the most effective ways to tell a story graphically and, in many ways, there’s no better way to do that than through a comic.”

Voting will continue through July 17 and the results will be revealed on the Feast site on July 25 along with information about each contributing artist. The first panel will be uploaded on August 1. Each week the newest panel will be available on the site for viewing and public commentary, which may then be worked back into the story. The comic will be completed by the end of September.

A Feast for the Eyes
The Collective Comic Project coincides with a redesign of Feast, iStock’s popular online gathering place for creatives to share, collaborate and learn. Feast provides information, articles and inspiration on current creative themes that change regularly. Membership is free and open to everyone.

August and September’s theme will focus on visual storytelling and will feature articles about the use of visual metaphors, cutting-edge advertising, illustration trends, editorial illustration and photography.

Foap - Make Money Via Your iPhone

MALMÖ, Sweden, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Foap is a new web service that enables users to sell iPhone photos via an app. By uploading the photo to the app, tagging it with descriptive word tags and submitting it for approval your photos can get sold. Based in Sweden, Foap joins a number of successful entrepreneurial companies, such as Skype, Spotify, Wrapp and iZettle.

Foap splits the revenue on a 50/ 50 basis with the photographer, and each photo is licensed for $10, as a campaign price, so you can earn $5 each when a company buys it. The money can be easily cashed out through the app, via PayPal integration.

However, not all images are approved. The reason could be that the image is too small, blurry, uses heavy Instagram filters or is poorly composed. In other words, users need to snap great photos.

"In the end, it's about accepting photos that will sell. We want to attract the best Iphoneographers and those who are passionate about photography rather then everyone," says David Los, Co-founder of Foap.

"Foap is also aiming to create a platform of where companies can post creative photo missions that the users can take on. The company has already partnered up with some photo buying companies that really see the value in Foap. The latest partner is Ferratum, a micro loan company which is constantly looking for photos that illustrates unexpected bills and expenses."

"We have seen a huge interest from companies that are looking for special genres of photos that they can't find elsewhere. Where do you for instance find a photo of three twins eating ice cream, in a fast and easy way? We have also learned it's very popular among our users so it's definitely a feature that we will work more on," says David Los.

The company has raised around $230K up to this date, and is looking to raise a second round within the next two months. The app launched in the Scandinavian AppStores on May 15, and has already signed up thousands of registered users who have uploaded tens of thousands of photos. The company has sold credits worth thousands of photos, but will start the real marketing today in order to put fire on the sales.

Stock Photography Sales Statistic June 2012

This is my stock photography sales statistic for June 2012. You can find a complete list of stock photography agencies that I work with here.

These are for me the best 4 performing stock agencies for June 2012:
  1. Shutterstock
  2. Alamy
  3. DepositPhotos
  4. iStockPhoto
This maybe the start of the summer hole. June had a decrease of 5% compared to May. The better news is that I had a increase of 42% compared to June 2011. It was the best month ever for BigStock, Cafepress, and Photospin.

(This statistic include referral earning at the different agencies)
