Corbis and Art Center College of Design Launch “Always On” Video Seminar Series

Initiative aims to support the creative community in personal and professional development by creating a global platform for art and design leaders to share insights and discuss trends

NEW YORK and PASADENA, USA – Corbis Images, a leading visual media provider for the creative community, and Art Center College of Design, a global leader in art and design education, today announced the launch of Always On: Talks by leaders in art and design, a new initiative that makes videos of presentations and panel discussions by experts in art and design available for free to anyone around the world at Art Center’s website, on Art Center’s YouTube and Vimeo page and through iTunes U.

Always On: Talks by leaders in art and design
is produced by Art Center and supported by Corbis. Throughout 2011, Corbis is contributing one dollar to the initiative for each order customers make online at corbisimages.com, with funds going to help Art Center produce more video presentations. With the worlds of art and design changing at the speed of light in the digital era, the goal of Always On is to provide the creative community with 24/7/365 online access to the latest perspectives from luminaries in art and design.

Design legend Kit Hinrichs, Principle of Studio Hinrichs and an alumnus of Art Center and member of its Board of Trustees, is helping to increase visibility of Always On within the creative community, including filming a short introductory video about the initiative. Hinrichs also recently worked with Corbis on its 24/7/365 digital and print calendar campaign to showcase the exceptional images in the Corbis collection.

“The design communication field is undergoing the most revolutionary changes that I’ve seen in my 40 plus year career in design,” says Hinrichs.  “Art directors and designers are being asked to accommodate print, online and mobile platforms and sometimes refresh content not just monthly or weekly, but daily and hourly. In short, audiences and creatives are ‘always on’ – and this initiative will help the community consider how to work through the challenges and opportunities in today’s world.”

Always On will feature both renowned members of Art Center’s faculty and guest speakers from around the world. The first video features associate professor Heidrun Mumper-Drumm, Art Center’s director of sustainability initiatives, who introduces key aspects of Comprehensive Design in a fun and engaging exercise.

Additional speakers will include the likes of designer Fiona Raby of Dunne + Raby, visionary sci-fi author Bruce Sterling, media artist Aaron Koblin, visual strategist Dan Goods, futures researcher Jason Tester, architecture blogger Geoff Manaugh, landscape artist Andrew Hem and fine artist Sarah Awad. They will discuss topics that address current and future trends in art and design, such as the practice of making things up in a rapidly changing world; the use of communication design across space, time and behavior; and establishing an original voice and point of view as an illustrator.

“Corbis’ generous gift and participation helps Art Center deliver educational content that demonstrates our commitment to providing access to the best in art and design education,” said Fred Fehlau, Provost, Art Center College of Design. “We believe Always On has the potential for Art Center to connect with a broader and more diverse audience in the creative community while highlighting the work and ideas of creative leaders from all over the world.”

With the videos available on open platforms globally such as YouTube, viewers can comment on the topics covered and continue the discussion and debate with other creatives around the world online.

“We are really proud to support an outstanding institution like Art Center of Design in producing Always On to share insights of some of the brightest minds in art and design with the creative community,” says John Cosley, Vice President of Online Marketing, Corbis. “Not only does Corbis aim to be the first stop for creative professionals looking for exceptional photography, illustration and footage for every project every day of the year, we also want to support providing access 24/7/365 to insights and ideas that help them grow personally and professionally.”

Corbis is also sponsoring a live panel discussion on changes in the design field that will feature Hinrichs and will take place during Creative Week New York.  Held by TALK NYC, “Creativity at the Speed of Light: Why design matters more – not less – in the digital age” will be held at the Corbis New York office on May 10.
