Seven years ago, buying a stock photo was a vastly different experience. Traditional stock agencies dominated the industry, and the cost of a stock image was out of reach for many customers. Shutterstock developed a unique business model which combined crowdsourcing images from talented contributors worldwide with affordable, user-friendly subscriptions.

Today, Shutterstock's library has over 12 million stock images and more than 200,000 stock footage clips. The site is available in 10 languages to serve a worldwide community of image buyers, and a fast, accurate search engine ensures customers can quickly find the images they need.

Shutterstock achieved its success through its commitment to providing high quality content at affordable prices and a dedication to developing innovative products and services. A timeline below provides a picture of Shutterstock's growth since 2003:
  • July 2003: Shutterstock is founded by Jon Oringer, president and CEO, who uploads 30,000 stock photos to the site.
  • February 1, 2006: Shutterstock becomes the world's largest subscription-based stock image agency, with more than half a million images.
  • February 9, 2006: Shutterstock is the first among its competitors to expand into stock footage.
  • June 5, 2007: Shutterstock introduces Shutterstock on the Red Carpet, expanding its collection of celebrity and editorial photos.
  • August 5, 2008: Shutterstock launches "On Demand" subscription plans to further meet the needs of image buyers.
  • September 23, 2009: Shutterstock acquires Bigstock.
  • February 16, 2010: Shutterstock's collection surpasses 10 million images.

"As Shutterstock celebrates seven years of growth and achievement, everyone at the company would like to thank our international community of contributors and buyers for helping us became a global leader in the stock image industry," said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock. "We look forward to growing along with all of you for many years to come."

Shutterstock Hits New Social Media Heights

Top stock photo and footage site a leader in harnessing social media to drive connections with its global community

August 31, 2010, New York - Shutterstock, the leading global provider of stock images and stock footage by subscription, has applied its winning ways to the social media realm, creating the strongest sense of community for buyers and contributors in the stock image industry.

Over the last year, Shutterstock has developed several innovative apps, such as Shuttertweet for Twitter and the Shutterstock Contributor App for Facebook, which enable contributors to alert friends and followers when Shutterstock accepts or sells their images.

Last March, the company started The Shutterstock Blog, a site filled with informative, creative content, the free images of the week, and the latest company news and updates. In June, Shutterstock launched a new blog geared to contributors called Shutterbuzz, which provides helpful tips and techniques for photographers, illustrators and videographers. Here, contributors can read up on various camera equipment, learn how to avoid getting their images rejected, and even write their own blog posts for inclusion.

In addition, Shutterstock recently hit 20,000 fans on Facebook, the most among its competitors, and has over 30,000 followers on Twitter.

Shutterstock’s high-quality collection of over 12 million fresh, vibrant stock images, and the brand’s remarkable success with crowdsourcing, have made it a favorite among bloggers. In a poll conducted by TopRank’s Online Marketing Blog this year, readers voted Shutterstock as the best source for royalty-free stock photos.

Adam Singer, who writes The Future Buzz blog and is an Online Marketing Blog contributor, said social media outreach has been a significant asset to Shutterstock.

“The community and trust Shutterstock is building provides quantitative and qualitative results and will prove an asset to their continued growth,” said Singer. “Shutterstock has become the definitive stock photo site for digitally savvy audiences." Singer is one of a select group of influential bloggers provided with access to the Shutterstock library as a way to show Shutterstock's exceptional utility in online publishing.

For Shutterstock, leveraging social media platforms to drive a strong connection with its global base of customers and contributors is an extension of the company’s commitment to providing superior customer service.

“Our ability to successfully leverage social media platforms demonstrates our desire to connect with Shutterstock’s large base of stock image buyers and contributors around the world,” said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock. “Our dedication to truly communicate with our community is what makes us stand out in a highly competitive market.”

Shutterstock Launches New Brand Identity and Viewfinder Logo

New Look Celebrates Creativity and Spotlights Shutterstock’s Stunning Imagery

May  2012 - Shutterstock, a global marketplace for digital imagery, today announced a new brand identity that celebrates the company’s evolution from its origin as a photography-focused agency into the thriving, diverse creative marketplace it is today. The new look blends technology and art, presenting Shutterstock as both an innovative company and artistic resource.

“Shutterstock was created to enhance visual storytelling. We understand the importance of imagery to communicate a message and we’ve activated that belief with this new brand identity,” said Jon Oringer, Founder and Chief Executive Officer.

At the center of Shutterstock’s visual identity is their new logo, which features a powerful and versatile framing device known as the Viewfinder. The Viewfiender represents artists on both sides of Shutterstock’s marketplace – whether they’re behind the lens or in front of the screen – and encourages them to express their own unique perspectives to drive visual communications across the globe.

“The redesign reflects our personality and allows us to showcase our vast, constantly evolving collection of assets,” said Matt Angorn, Vice President and Creative Director. “We built upon the existing brand identity, maintaining a clean font and injecting a bold palate of red and grey. Red captures the passion of both our contributors and our customers, while the grey serves as a neutral balance and symbolizes the blank canvas that they work on.”

Shutterstock collaborated with Lippincott’s award winning brand experts to develop the new visual identity, which debuted yesterday on Shutterstock’s web site. For a video revealing the new brand campaign, please visit http://shutr.bz/viewfindervideo.

  • Search terms with the largest year-on-year growth include "Gatsby", "3D printing" and "BYOD" ("bring your own device"), with each rising 625%, 583% and 407% respectively
  • Video is an increasingly popular medium for visual storytellers and access to new image-capture technology such as 4K is growing. Popular video content topics include education, 3D renderings, transportation and cityscapes.

"The increasing demand for imagery is leading to new and innovative content types," said Shutterstock VP Content Scott Braut. "Our data reveals how photographers, illustrators, designers and videographers are influencing design trends on a local and global scale."

"Businesses and storytellers are using images to communicate in more ways and across more channels than ever before," added VP Global Communications Meagan Kirkpatrick. Introducing Shutterstock's New Contributor Page

Shutterstock introduced a major upgrade to the Shutterstock contributor site. Contributors now have access to cool and useful visual data at a glance as soon as they log in to submit.shutterstock.com. With a great new map feature and informative charts, it’s never been easier for stock artists to see how their images are performing on Shutterstock.

With extensive input from contributors in creating these tools, Shutterstock is proud to lead the way in sharing information with their artists.

The centerpiece of the new page is Shutterstock Latest Downloads map. The map updates in real time, and Shutterstock plans to add more functionality to the map in the future.

Elsewhere on the page, contributors can see an overview of recently uploaded, submitted and approved images, as well as charts of their weekly earnings, including a breakdown of earnings by new content.

The new contributor page is all about helping artists succeed on Shutterstock, and making Shutterstock site a satisfying and enjoyable experience. Shutterstock will continue to collect feedback from our contributors and make refinements. Shutterstock is committed to making Shutterstock the best online stock imagery site for artists.

Shutterstock Announces Search Upgrades, Including Real-Time Search

Innovations make Shutterstock a superior choice for image buyers and photographers

June 7, 2010, New York – Shutterstock, the leading global provider of stock images and footage by subscription, is investing aggressively in search technology with a series of innovations in the first half of 2010.

Offering more than 11 million images and 180,000 footage clips, with search supported in 10 languages, Shutterstock helps busy professionals quickly find the right royalty-free content for any project.

Shutterstock’s recent search enhancements include:
  • Saved Search and Search Alerts, features that empower image buyers to track topics of interest easily and automatically. Customers can receive free e-mail notifications when new images match a saved search.
  • People Search, which identifies images based on the number of people in a photograph, as well as their gender, age, and ethnicity.
  • An improved Similar Images Search, which recommends other images based on qualities such as keywords, image colors and models.
  • A Real-Time Search engine, which indexes new images within seconds, rather than hours. Image and footage buyers will see fresh content faster, including up-to-the-minute editorial images.

Additionally, Shutterstock continues to refine its proprietary “Most Popular” results algorithm, which weighs keyword relevance, image download frequency, and other customer behavior. The search engine produces more accurate results than competing stock sites, and is especially precise with searches involving multiple words.

Search improvements benefit artists as well. Shutterstock crowdsources the talents of photographers, illustrators and videographers around the world who earn money when customers download their content. Real-Time Search means approved images and footage will appear on Shutterstock faster, and a “Newest First” search results page will always display fresher and more varied content.

"We pride ourselves on innovation and attention to the needs of image and footage buyers,” said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock. “Building the stock image industry’s best search engine shows our commitment to our customers and confirms our leadership position among providers of visual content.”

Shutterstock Introduces Single Image Sales

Shutterstock announced a new single-image product. They have created the new single-image prduct in response to customer demand, that they think will help Shutterstock contributors to earn more money. Shutterstock is currently testing this product.

Here’s what the contributors need to know:
  • For the first time, Shutterstock is offering customers in certain markets the option to purchase one Shutterstock image download at a time.
  • Shutterstock's current packages and their royalty rates will not be impacted by this change.
  • Shutterstock is using a percentage-based earnings model for this new standard license single-image product, and other products they may test and or launch in the future. This will let them experiment with new offerings in a way that remains fair to contributors.
The Details:

Under the new single-image pricing they are testing, customers can download any Shutterstock image with a standard license for a set price. Shutterstock designed this product to attract new customers who aren’t currently making purchases at Shutterstock.

Royalty rates for this product range from 20% to 30% depending on the contributors lifetime earnings at Shutterstock. They designed these percentages to be very close to what the contributor currently earn for On Demand downloads. You will see these sales recorded in the “Single & Other Downloads” column of your Download Stats page.
